The Challenge
What will your learner investigate?
Can you generate enough electrical energy from lemons to demonstrate a working circuit?
Learning outcomes
- Explain that a chemical reaction can produce electrical energy.
- Construct a simple circuit using electrodes and lemons.
- Measure or compare electrical output and troubleshoot connections.
Connected learning
Science: electricity and chemical reactions; Mathematics: measurement and comparison; Design & Technology: circuits; Geography: energy sources.

What you'll need
Here's what may be useful for completing this activity. Requirements may vary depending on the learner, activity format and equipment available.
Materials & consumables
- Several lemons
- galvanised nails (nails coated with zinc)
- copper strips or coins of suitable composition
- connecting wires.
Equipment, tools & software
- Sensitive multimeter
- clip-ended electrical connecting leads
- low-current LED (optional, may require several cells in series)
- safety glasses.
Safety & preparation
- Use only low-voltage circuits
- do not connect to mains power
- avoid short circuits
- do not eat used lemons. A single lemon may not light an LED.
These preparation notes support planning and do not replace a project-specific risk assessment or appropriate adult supervision.
