Balloon Rocket Lab

Turn a balloon, straw and length of string into a small home science laboratory. Learners investigate air pressure, thrust, direction and friction, then plan a fair test and use their own evidence to improve the rocket. The course is self-paced and designed for an adult and learner to complete together using ordinary household materials.

A bright balloon-powered rocket moving along a string in a calm home-learning setting

This course information is available now. Lesson recordings, captions and the learning area will open after final review.

What you will learn

  • Describe how escaping air creates movement.
  • Identify thrust, direction and friction in a balloon-rocket system.
  • Follow a simple fair-test process by changing one variable at a time.
  • Measure and record observations clearly.
  • Use test results to choose and explain a design improvement.

Future Forge lesson formula

WATCH → TRY → CREATE → CHALLENGE → SHARE

  1. 1

    WATCH

Learn what a force is; see how escaping air makes the balloon move; introduce action and reaction; watch a balloon rocket demonstration.

  2. 2

    TRY

Make a simple balloon rocket; predict how far it will travel; test it.

  3. 3

    CREATE

Experiment with balloon size, rocket shape, amount of air, weight and string length; record and compare results.

  4. 4

    CHALLENGE

Redesign the rocket to travel further, travel faster, stay stable, or carry a small payload.

  5. 5

    SHARE

Present the best design and explain what was changed and why.

What the learner creates

A balloon-powered rocket and an investigation into how to make it travel further or faster.

Parent or guardian note

This course works best when an adult helps to make the launch line secure, keeps the test area clear and supports the learner with tying balloons if needed. Encourage predictions and questions rather than supplying the answer: the purpose is to notice evidence, not to achieve the fastest possible rocket.

Safety and access

Adult supervision is required. Check whether anyone taking part has a latex allergy and use a suitable latex-free balloon if necessary. Keep balloons and broken balloon pieces away from babies, young children and pets. Do not overinflate balloons, aim them at faces, attach hard or sharp objects, or release them outdoors. Secure the string at a sensible height, keep the route away from stairs and doorways, and remove or cut the line down as soon as testing is complete.
